Project#four-The portfolio-critique

The art portfolio website that I chose is called Art portfolio by Mary Rappazzo, she has a website that is simple and to the point.Perhaps it is a bit too simple and cold use more color and digital flare, but continuing the ease of finding the pages. The site has a home page that lead to 5 other pages which in turn lead back to each other with easy to see buttons and no confusing or hidden buttons. There is no music at this website which I think in this case is good, since it is more professional in my opinion.
The portfolio site contains an artist page that includes a very short bio, then information on where she has exhibited her work. the page includes her awards and her publications. this page is impressive and informative and shows how talented and motivated she is. The next page is labeled Art and Design it includes sections of different types of art, figurative, landscape, abstracts, and illustration and design. this second page works because her artwork is amazing her style is reflected in all the categories and I am really glad I found her work,it is full of color and the compositions are well conceived. The third page is information. This page is not clear it includes a paragraph that states she accepts commissions. this area needs some help in its basic wording and it needs more information to be more complete. The fourth page is a list of links which is just a list which is fine , I really found nothing wrong with it except the digital flare that the whole site could use. Finally a contact page which is worded in a friendly manner which is nice but seems to be geared for a not so professional clientele.http://www.mar1eye.com/index.htm

Video Concept Assignment

The concept for my 2-5 minute assignment is to basically lead my viewer thru a personal verbal narrative, as I physically lead them through a journey from my dormitory to our classroom using a time based medium, video, and the application i-movie. This new experience will offer an exploration in investigating self and personal environment then offer it to my veiwers in a sequential narrative. Using the video and the i-movie application I would tell others how difficult life can be living with disabilities, how I view myself and how others view me may be in the dialog. The goal is to delve into the determination of the human spirit that is trying to overcome disabilities and some of the challenges that must be dealt with then show it to an audience, and in some way help form new ideas and fresh opinions in the viewer, in essence create change. Some of the topics that I would like to address are the negative opinions of people toward the disabled, jugdemental actions that people unwittingly take, and some of the physical opstacles that create burdens upon people in wheelchairs.

VIDEO ART

Intro to Digital Arts
Spring 2007

Blog Entry: Project 2-1 (Reading Response QUIZ)

Reading #2-1: "Video Art", pp. 78-113 by Michael Rush from New Media in Late 20th Century Art

1) Name an Early artist mentioned in the article for CONCEPTUAL WORK performing in front of the camera.
Describe a work. (2 points) One of the artists mentioned associated with conceptualism is Vito Acconci in his work called Theme Song (1973) he lies on the floor inches from the camera, in front of a black and white striped couch and "attempts to seduce the veiwer to join him." I want you in side me," he pleads repeatedly as he smokes an endless cigarette and shifts positions on the floor.

2) Name an artist mentioned who deals with Personal Narrative. Describe a work. (2 points) Juan Downey is a Chilean artist who lived in New York for many years in Moving (1974) Downey used a Portapak camera and created a video diary of his travels acrossed America, Peru, Bolivia, and down to his native Chile in an attempt to recover his lost self.

3) Describe the piece you were most interested in viewing after reading this article. Look the work up on the links, and expand on Rush's comments.(2 points) I Thought that the Factory Diaries between 1970 and 1976 by Andy Warhol would be really cool to see this is a time when I was in high school and was out partying, it kind of feels like a connection to my youth. I have seen some footage of him in his studio from Factory Diaries in a photography class and I think elsewhere in my long life perhaps P.B.S. He was a strange cat, but those were some strange times.

4) What do you better understand now about Video Art? (2 points) The things that I better understand are that there is a better respect for the primative work even beginning in the sixties when the pioneers of video art and electronic art was just experimental i didn't think too many younger artists were very concerned with the old low tech stuff. Also, I Now think Video Art is more of a communication art after reading this article my scope or focus of Video Art is a lot wider angle. I see a greater link with art and visual communication technology, with unlimited possibilities.

5) Based on Rush and this article, what makes Video Art vs. an "artful video"? (2 points) in the article 'Art' and 'artful' are said to be separate, though linked terms that exist to help us differentiate between what can and cannot be considered to be art. I believe Art is an expression of the spirit of man and the world around him and artfulness is something creative but born out of a desire to sell something or communicate an idea. Most simply and aptly put by Rush, "Art lies in the intentionality of the artist.

Artist Lieana Frometa Gillo

This self portrait is Saturated with color, but instead of being childlike it remains sophisticated. The female figure is placed well off center with objects in the foreground and background that support the space and creates a wonderful composition . The use of space around the figure allows a collage type of placement of her memories or thoughts that she seems so immersed in. Line is used like a blue print for man made and natural complexities of whatever the problem seems to be. Some of the line has the appealing quality of that collage of blueprints and memories and has a nautical look as if someone she loves is a long lost sea captain. The color and the mood appeals to me and evokes the imagination, especially the pondering expression as if trying to map out or solve some deep and private quandary.
The identity is addressed as a person with a problem that is just breaking her heart, and if this difficulty could just be fixed she would be alright because she is young, beautiful and Vibrant. This female represents helplessness of the human condition.
